I’ve always considered myself athletic. Played multiple sports in high school and even afterwards was involved with one sport or another. I’ve always been thin, skinny really, and dabbled with working out in the gym. I think my problem with the gym was lack of consistency and self motivation. Like most people excuses were easy to come by.
I’ve always wanted to get in better shape. Get stronger. Build muscle mass. I had heard about CrossFit but didn’t think it was for me…figured I’d pass out or embarrass myself. An amazing person suggested I try her CrossFit gym but I still had doubts.
That was 3 years ago. I was 48, a nurse in the ER, and hadn’t pushed any weights for years or really done anything other than run now and again.
I took the plunge and talked to Ray and came in and did some fundamentals. I haven’t looked back!
CrossFit Pledge Fitness was the perfect place for me! The group class setting is what I needed to keep me consistent and the coaches and fellow athletes have kept me motivated. The Pledge atmosphere is lively, fun, and feels more like a group of friends getting together to work out. The coaches are super attentive and make sure your form is correct to avoid injuries. The goal is to make you a better YOU not the best in the gym. The coaches push you to achieve your own milestones not someone else’s.
I’m pushing 52 and feel I’m in the best shape of my life because of CrossFit Pledge! Just reached new heights with a 285 squat and 365 dead lift. Not bad for 51 and a broken back! Thanks Coach Ray, Boj, Justin, and Eddie for all the encouragement (and ribbing)

1) Why did you start your fitness journey?
I wanted to build my confidence up and wanted to be able to push myself out of my comfort level.

Pull-ups were always a goal for me and thanks to Pledge, I am able to do strict pull-ups.
6) How has your new acquired fitness level helped you outside of the gym?
My new acquired fitness level actually helped me in my career. I am 4’11” Thanks to CrossFit Pledge I am as fast, strong and athletic as any other person in my profession. So my small size doesn’t hold me back.
7) In your own words, what’s the difference between a regular “global gym” and CrossFit Pledge?
It’s just better. You make friends there. You get to workout with like minded people so you are able to keep yourself accountable on your goals. The coaches are always helping you out. If you need help on a certain goal or help with your nutrition the coaches will make a side program for you.

9) Is CrossFit as scary as people make it out to be?
I thought it was, but as soon as you walked in, everyone starts smiling, saying hi, asking you if you need any help. Then when you start classes the coaches are very good at paying attention to detail, meaning they will work with your pace. As long as you show up and give effort you will have fun.
10) What is your favorite cheat food?
OMG, I love hot Cheetos, pizza, wings and Fettuccine Alfredo.

1) Why did you start your fitness journey?

Originally I started my fitness journey as I had aspirations of joining the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. However, I knew I was nowhere near “In Shape” in order to successfully pass the academy physical demands.

2) How old are you?

32

3) What is your profession?

Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff

4) What is your favorite thing about working out at CrossFit Pledge?

The social outlet. I know when I’m going for a gym session, not only am I going to get a workout in. But I’m also going to see the friends I’ve made while working out at CrossFit Pledge. The fellow gym members do not criticize one-another, but they motivate each other and push one-another to keep going no matter how difficult the workout. Also, the coaches are great at motivating and providing individual tips / training to help one grow and further in their physical performance. There are some examples of them at work at koko-rugs.

5) What are you able to do now that you were not able to do prior to joining CrossFit Pledge?

The best answer I have is this. I am now comfortable with being uncomfortable. I learned this through CrossFit Pledge and enduring the workouts and taking the training and tips from the coaching staff coupled with their motivation. Prior to CrossFit Pledge, when I worked out and the workout got tough; I would take a break or stop completely. CrossFit Pledge broke mental walls in my mind that were preventing me from growth in both a mental and physical manner.

6) How has your new acquired fitness level helped you outside of the gym?

Outside of the gym I am an overall more confident person both mentally and physically. As a Deputy Sheriff, Confidence is absolutely necessary in my line of work.

7) In your own words, what’s the difference between a regular “global gym” and CrossFit Pledge?

I use to go to LA Fitness. I would lift a few weights, look in the mirror a few times and simply pretended I knew what I was doing; but in reality I was lost and didn’t have a clue where to start. And there was no way I could pay for a personal trainer. At CrossFit Pledge, you literally have a personal trainer with you on each and every workout, guiding you, building you and not letting you quit when it gets tough.

8) Thus far, what achievement(s) are you most proud of?

I’m am most proud that if it was not for my experience at CrossFit Pledge, I would not be where I am now serving as a Deputy Sheriff. CrossFit Pledge has helped me further both my professional and personal life and overall made me a better version of myself.

9) Is CrossFit as scary as people make it out to be?

There is nothing to be scared of. People often ask me “Man how can you do CrossFit? I heard that’s tough.” My response is always the same: I’m nothing special. I’m just an average guy. If I can do CrossFit and have gone on to become a Deputy, there is no excuse for no one else.

10) What is your favorite cheat food?

My favorite cheat food is going once a week for a hot bowl of Pho. Its addicting.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Juan but mostly everyone calls me by my last name “Favela” (close friends got lazy and now just call me “fa”). I play video games, attend concerts, spend time with family and friends…..just a regular dude with a bald head.
2) Why did you start your fitness journey?
I’ve always tried to be fit but never had the correct guidance. I got a bit more serious in 2015 when I signed up for my first half-marathon and have progressed little by little since then.
3) How old are you?
29
4) What is your profession?
System Administrator.
5) Are you a parent/grandparent?
No
6) What is your favorite thing about working out at CrossFit Pledge?
Being comfortable with those around me. Nobody is trying to show anybody up. If anything, everyone pretty much helps each other out.
7) What are you able to do now that you were not able to do prior to joining CrossFit Pledge?
I’m lifting the most weight I’ve ever lifted in my life now!
8) How has your new acquired fitness level helped you outside of the gym?
I train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu aside from crossfit and all of the conditioning and strength training has really increased my BJJ skills. My recovery time has decreased and my leg strength has really increased. I’m able to lock my opponents in holds and keep them locked for a good while. Before crossfit, they used to just get out of every hold I’d put them in. Aside from that my running has gotten better and my legs don’t get as tired when I go on long bike rides.
9) In your own words, what’s the difference between a regular “global gym” and CrossFit Pledge?
At a global gym I always felt a bit shy to do certain things or hit certain machines. Felt like eyes were always on me to judge or laugh. I’ve always been a skinny guy so I would lift light weights at the gym and I would just feel embarrassed sometimes. Yeah it’s dumb but that’s how I felt, so it was a bit discouraging. At Pledge, if someone sees you struggling with something they’ll come up and coach you through it, not to show off or feel superior but to help you improve and not get hurt. Nobody is judging, everyone is friendly, so you can work on getting stronger comfortably. This is all from my experience. Not saying global gyms aren’t great but for me Pledge really helped me out.
10) Thus far, what achievement(s) are you most proud of?
I hit a max squat of 225 yesterday. Most I’ve ever done.
11) Is CrossFit as scary as people make it out to be?
No way. Not at Pledge.
12) What is your favorite cheat food?
Cereal. Cocoa Puffs, Captain Crunch, Frosted Flakes, the list goes on.

1) Why did you start your fitness journey?

Mayela introduced me to the gym I was looking for a different gym. My previous gym was not motivating at all. The first day of my fundamentals, I got a lot of positive vibes from the coaches. Everyone was really welcoming, I felt like I was part of the gym on my first day.

2) How old are you?

25.

3) What is your profession?

Receptionist at Kaiser Permanente.

4) What is your favorite thing about working out at CrossFit Pledge?

The atmosphere, people are that friendly. The coaches are not there just to look pretty, they actually take time to teach you. I can be myself at the gym without anyone judging me.

5) What are you able to do now that you were not able to do prior to joining CrossFit Pledge?

Just picking up a bar, I never lifted before. Now I am able to bench press and squat without being afraid.
6) How has your new acquired fitness level helped you outside of the gym?

Now I am active and making healthier choices. It also has help me to stay positive and not dwell on the past. If I’m negative my workout performance will be horrible, so I decided to start exercising outside the gym using training from BodEnvy Coolsculpting site online.

7) In your own words, what’s the difference between a regular “global gym” and CrossFit Pledge?

Global gym to me is all about business, no motivation. Unlike CrossFit Pledge, it’s motivational and the coaches actually care about their members. They take their time to work and help you out. You eventually create friendships unlike a Global gym.

8) Thus far, what achievement(s) are you most proud of?

Through out my 2 year journey, I was able to run a 8:30 min mile. Never in my entire like have I ever ran a mile at that time.

9) Is CrossFit as scary as people make it out to be?

Not at all, people get intimidated by the word “CrossFit”. Especially women because they think weights will make them look like a man. I felt the opposite, it tones your body. If anything, it make you look like a badass with a big butt😊

10) What is your favorite cheat food?
Pizza and beer🍺
